A Stay At Home Dad And Frugal Thinking … renewable energy and your home business

If you’re a home business owner or just a stay at home dad, you probably ask yourself often how you could cut overhead costs. Though you may not have to commute to a work place, working out of your home presents its own set of energy costs, and you may cringe when monitoring how much power your business is using. One economical solution that many home business owners don’t think of is renewable energy.

However, alternative sources of power can help you save money and the environment at the same time.

Why renewable energy?

Unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy sources that can harness the power of solar rays, wind, water or geothermal heat have the ability to produce power without polluting the environment. These sources also have the potential to free major economies from the grip of petrol and natural gas producers, which helps lower costs. Renewable energy is also often safer than coal mining or operating nuclear power plants.

When most people think of renewable green energy, they may immediately associate it with solar panels on the roof of a house, which in most cases is the most effective and easiest way to implement a renewable energy plan for your home and your business. If you are a number cruncher, which most small business owners are by nature, you may be initially put off by the upfront costs of installing solar panels and wiring in your home.

However, it is more useful to consider the big financial picture when thinking about this type of renewable energy.

There are several ways in which a solar panel system could be financially beneficial for you as a small business owner. For example, most people use solar power in conjunction with power from an electrical grid, which serves to lower their electricity bills. In fact, depending on how much energy you consume on an annual basis, your solar panels could pay for themselves in just a few years by significantly reducing your electricity bill. Even still, some homes are completely off the grid, which means that they produce enough electricity to rely solely on solar power. These homes are referred to as “off-grid” systems. In addition, some homes produce even more electricity than they use, allowing renewable energy companies or the government to “purchase” their excess power for use in other places. This is sometimes done through energy credits.

Whilst not as common, homes located in windy areas also have the option of installing wind small electricity-generating wind turbines on their rooftops. This type of renewable energy is still relatively new, but 2011 sales suggest that it is catching on quickly. Just as solar panels can convert solar cells from the sun’s rays into electricity, wind turbines use the kinetic energy produced by heavy winds to create power.

Because wind power is not as developed as solar power, however, it presents its own challenges. Many home business owners who wish to install turbines have to first face a lack of safety codes and zoning laws to guide them through the process.

In spite of these challenges, using a renewable energy source for your home business puts you on the cutting edge of home-use technology and business solutions. And as an entrepreneur and homeowners, those are two qualities that you can greatly appreciate.
